Container shipping for vehicles is a method of exporting cars by securely loading and bracing them inside a standard 20ft or 40ft sealed steel container for ocean freight.
While RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) shipping is common, container shipping is chosen for its superior protection, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness in specific situations. The key difference is that the vehicle is treated as cargo within a locked box, shielding it completely from the elements and potential transit damage.
When to Choose Container Shipping
Deciding between transport methods is a crucial step in the import process. Container shipping is often the best choice for:
High-Value or Sensitive Vehicles: The enclosed steel container provides maximum protection against weather, sea salt, dust, and security risks. This makes it ideal for new electric vehicles (EVs), luxury sedans, or classic cars where preserving pristine condition is paramount.
Shipping Multiple Units: A 40ft High-Cube (HC) container can typically fit 2-4 standard-sized cars or two SUVs. For dealers or businesses importing multiple vehicles, this method can be more cost-effective per unit than shipping them individually.
Including Spare Parts or Goods: Unlike RoRo, a container allows you to ship spare parts, tires, or other goods along with your vehicles. This is a major advantage for dealers looking to build up their parts inventory.
Destinations Without RoRo Ports: Container vessels serve a much wider network of global ports than specialized RoRo ships. If your destination port doesn't have RoRo facilities, container shipping is the only viable option.
At Starvia Automotive, our RoRo and Container Shipping service helps buyers analyze their order size, destination, and vehicle type to determine the most logical and economical shipping solution.
The Container Shipping Process
Exporting a car from China via container follows a clear, structured process to ensure safety and efficiency.
Quotation and Booking: After you finalize your vehicle selection, Starvia Automotive provides a transparent CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) quote that includes the cost of container shipping to your destination port.
Loading and Lashing: The vehicle is carefully loaded into the container. It is then professionally secured using a system of high-strength straps, wheel chocks, and braces to ensure it cannot move at all during the ocean voyage. This step is critical for preventing damage.
Sealing and Transport: Once secured, the container is sealed with a unique numbered seal. It is then trucked to the port, cleared through export customs, and loaded onto the container vessel.
Arrival and Unloading: Upon arrival at the destination port, the container is offloaded. The importer or their local agent handles customs clearance, pays any duties, and can then transport the sealed container to a safe location for unloading the vehicle.
