Importers should verify VIN numbers using the following best practices:
- Request VIN in the contract: The sales contract or purchase order should list the VIN for each vehicle. Starvia includes VINs in its order confirmations.
- Get a photo of the VIN plate: Ask the exporter to send a clear photo of the VIN plate affixed to the vehicle (usually on the dashboard or door jamb). Verify it matches the VIN in the documents.
- Use a third-party inspection service: SGS, BV, or similar inspectors can confirm the VIN during pre-shipment inspection. They will take photos and verify the VIN against the order.
- Cross-check with manufacturer records: Some OEMs allow VIN decoding online. Use the OEM’s VIN decoder to check the model year, engine type, and factory options.
- Check for tampering: Look for signs of altered or replica plates. The VIN should be stamped or etched, not just a sticker.
Starvia provides VIN confirmation photos and third-party inspection reports before shipment. This ensures that the vehicle you pay for is the one that is shipped. For more details, see our Certifications page.
